Cape Ann Fine Arts is pleased to announce the new acquisition of an original Emile Gruppe (1896-1978) antique oil painting on canvas. This piece was recently uncovered in a collectors storage where it had been located for many years. It is now available for sale to those with an keen eye for the rare and exceptional.Emile Gruppe’s auction recordshave exceeded over $59,000, and examples of this caliber are nearly impossible to find.
This oil on canvas titled “Winter Solace” is a reflection of the change in pallet that Gruppe developed. In his early career he worked with a tonalist style, and as time progressed feeling that he had outgrown that medium developed a unique blend of realism and impressionism that propelled his career to todays record auction heights.
Most well known for his impressionist landscapes, Emile Gruppe was heavily influenced by Monet in his early career. His mastery of broken color, as illustrated in our exceptional painting, is woven throughout his works. Born from a family of artists, his father Charles P. Gruppe was one of the most renowned artists of the 19th century. He received his formal training from the Hague in the Netherlands and also attended New York cities National Academy of Design. As time progressed, he visited the city of Gloucester Massachusetts in the year 1925 and was instantly drawn to the beauty of what was at the time a small fishing village and art community. He established his studio in the popular artists locale, and every summer for the next several years attempted to capture the balance of commotion and tranquility characteristic of harbor life.
Gruppe continued to paint in the North Shore area of Massachusetts primarily, while making winter trips to Vermont. Towards the end of his life he frequently traveled to Florida and even taught budding artists in that region. Emile Gruppe, one of the most identifiable North Shore painters, died in East Gloucester Massachusetts in September 1978 in the very same town that had inspired him over half a century earlier.
